 Accidental Planning

Myungho Choi is chasing a mysterious feeling.

His works are modeled on the computer, then revised and negotiated when rendered physically. Some works have a veneer of precision, but up close you can see many imperfections (a.k.a. sloppy).

Some have layers of previous ideas that exist as ghosts behind the finalized statement. Some are simple, where the organic shapes are made by nature, allowing gravity to make the gesture.

He works mostly with tone to focus on form. However, it is likely that he finds color too challenging, and disguises this deficiency as personal format.

His creates counterpoints by executing planned ideas with improvised gestures, and distills all the visual motifs he has experienced into simple, primal gestures.

Myungho spends a good portion of his time being confused about the the behavior of people including himself

“Myungho Choi’s work is immediately visually impactful, with graphically arresting imagery realized in a no-nonsense palette of black, white and grays. And yet, the inherent sharpness of Choi’s work is keenly balanced with unexpectedly painterly touches - trailing pigment drips, ethereal smoke-like plumes, indulgently gestural brushstrokes - which lend a sense of playfulness and recall the artist’s making process in more temporal terms. The viewer is invited to explore; to contemplate influences like Adolph Gottlieb and Mark Rothko, or not - as Choi’s work is not conditionally referential, but a wholly genuine reflection of the artist’s passion and focused expression.”

 Primal Instincts

Myungho was born in Seoul Korea, studied art at the Columbus College of Art & Design on a full scholarship.

Myungho moved to New York City in 2001, and since his arrival, he has been trying to cram as many visual references he can fit into his tiny noggin.

When he is creating, he is, at times, aware of the sacred lineage that connects artists of today with the cave painters of Lascaux and beyond. It reminds him to trust his primal instincts.

Holding it Down in NYC

Myungho Choi is a Swiss design, filthy hip-hop, classic noir, deep house, NBA basketball, abstract expressionism junkie from the bowels of the midwest trying suck out the marrow in New York City, aka New Jack City, aka Wall Street hood rats, aka marketing mayhem, aka starving models central, aka the planet.
